Delia Huerta Arrearan, a 57-year-old crossing guard who has worked for the city’s Department of Transportation since, 2006, was struck and killed in a pedestrian accident that also left a 16-year-old girl injured in the San Fernando Valley’s Glen neighborhood. According to a KTLA news report, the incident occurred the morning of Sept. 16 when a car heading east on Vanowen Street hit the crossing guard and the 16-year-old student who were crossing the street near Sunnyslope Avenue. Two pedestrians were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after a hit-and-run crash in Palm Springs the evening of July 27. According to a report in the Desert Sun, a black sedan struck the pedestrians as they walked in a marked crosswalk on Calle Encilia between Andreas and Amado roads. The driver of the vehicle did not stop. But, he was found a short distance away and was stopped and detained by police. Elyssa Negrete, 30, was killed in a pedestrian accident in Long Beach, which officials said, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a KTLA news report, Negrete was crossing Pacific Avenue at Burnett Street in a marked crosswalk when a car fatally struck her. Negrete was transported to an area hospital where she died from her injuries. A man walking alongside Negrete in the crosswalk was also hit and critically injured. Detectives say they are still looking into whether that man, 35, knew Negrete or simply happened to be near her at the time of the crash. Continue reading →

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a speeding motorcyclist who was trying to evade law enforcement officials in downtown Los Angeles. According to a KTLA news report, California Highway Patrol officers tried to stop the 2013 Kawasaki Ninja 250 motorcycle for running a red light in an unincorporated area of Whittier the night of May 30. The motorcyclist, later identified as 27-year-old Brian Jesse Leon of East Los Angeles, refused to stop and led authorities on a pursuit that spanned the 605, 5 and 101 freeways at speeds over 100 mph. A 72-year-old man in an electric wheelchair and his caretaker were struck and injured by a dump truck in Costa Mesa. According to a KTLA news report, the truck hit the man and a 53-year-old woman, an Anaheim resident, while they were crossing the street at Anaheim Avenue between 19th Street and Plumer Street the afternoon of May 22. Joe Santos, 58, was killed in a Laguna Niguel pedestrian accident after a vehicle struck him as he was walking in a marked crosswalk. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Serenity Lane and Golden Lantern Street the morning of Dec. 31. A 79-year-old La Puente man died and his 72-year-old wife was injured in a West Covina pedestrian accident when a vehicle struck the couple that was walking at a street intersection. According to a KTLA news report the incident occurred at the intersection of Fairgrove and Sunset avenues the morning of Dec. 13. Harlee Ferris, 24 months, was killed and her father Robert Ferris, 32, was critically injured after a vehicle struck them both the evening of Nov. 4. According to a KABC news report, the dad and daughter were crossing Santa Gertrudes Avenue when a sedan traveling north on Santa Gertrudes hit them. Oscar Martinez, 33, was killed in a Lake Forest pedestrian accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal crash occurred the evening of Sept. 24. Witnesses reported the man lying in the street suffering from a head injury near the intersection of Ridge Route Drive and Rockfield Boulevard.
