Bryan Lembke, 39, died Nov. 11, days after he suffered critical injuries in a Long Beach bicycle accident. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred on Nov. 7 when Lembke was rear-ended while biking westbound in the third lane of Spring Street near the 605 Freeway. The driver, a 53-year-old Cypress man, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. No arrests or citations have been reported yet. Mike Kreza, a Costa Mesa Fire Captain, has been critically injured after being struck by a driver in Mission Viejo the morning of Nov. 3. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the bicycle accident occurred on Alicia Parkway near Via Burgos. When Sheriff’s deputies arrived at the scene, they found Kreza lying in the roadway. He was unresponsive with visible head and body trauma. A bicyclist was struck and killed in a Van Nuys hit and run accident early morning Nov. 1. According to a City News Service report, the hit-and-run driver was later apprehended and taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence. A man was killed in a bicycle accident in Lancaster the morning of Aug. 25. According to a KTLA news report, the deadly collision occurred along Avenue K east of Stanridge Avenue. Preliminary investigations show that the bicyclist was riding west on Avenue K in the bicycle lane, when a man was driving a vehicle westbound as well. A 33-year-old woman was arrested after she left the scene of a Costa Mesa car accident that resulted in injuries to a bicyclist. According to a KTLA news report, Pratiti Renee Mehta, 33, has been charged with felony hit and run resulting in injury. Her arrest came after details about the incident were posted to social media, police officials said. Police officers and fire officials responded to the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Red Hill Avenue and Bristol Street the morning of March 20. Continue reading →
A man in his 30s suffered fatal injuries in a bicycle accident after he was struck by a sedan. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the incident occurred when the man was riding his bike along La Palma Avenue just west of Moody Street the night of March 13, 2017. The 18-year-old driver of the sedan stopped and called 911.
It is not clear if the bicyclist was using a crosswalk at the time of the accident. Police don’t believe alcohol or drugs were factors. The female driver was not cited or arrested. A man sustained a head injury in a Newport Beach bicycle accident after an SUV struck him near a street intersection. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury crash occurred the night of February 20, 2017 on Westcliff Drive just before Rutland Road. Police said both vehicles were traveling eastbound on Westcliff near Rutland when they collided for unknown reasons. The bicyclist, a man in his 40s, was hospitalized with head trauma. However, the nature and extent of his injuries is not known. No citations or arrests were reported. The investigation is ongoing.

A man was killed in a bicycle accident in Stanton after a vehicle struck him at the intersection of Chapman Avenue and Beach Boulevard early morning on January 18, 2017. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the driver of the vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived at the scene. The victim was transported to an area trauma center where he died shortly afterward.
A little later, Garden Grove police made a traffic stop on a vehicle matching the description of the suspected hit-and-run vehicle. The driver was detained and questioned, but not arrested. Officials said the investigation is ongoing to determine if they have the “right guy.” Investigators are also not sure yet if the bicyclist was using the crosswalk or if the driver might have run the red light.

Saul Lopez, 15, a 10th grader at Vaughn Charter School was killed in a bicycle accident in Pacoima. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the fatal collision occurred the morning of November 15, 2016 at the corner of Glenoaks Boulevard and Vaughn Street. Lopez was riding his bike to his school when a 2016 Dodge Ram pickup truck, which was southbound on Glenoaks Boulevard collided with a 2006 Chevy pickup headed east on Vaughn Street.
The impact sent both trucks in a southbound direction where the Dodge struck the boy, who was riding west in the south crosswalk at the intersection. Lopez was pinned under the Dodge. It is not clear which truck had the right of way. Both motorists stopped at the scene and cooperated with police and neither was arrested. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8000.

Cairo Joseph Castaneda, 42, of North Hollywood, was killed in a bicycle accident in Studio City the morning of April 5, 2016. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, Castaneda was cycling west in the 12000 block of Ventura Place when he entered the intersection at Radford Avenue. He was struck by a privately-owned trash truck. Castaneda was pronounced dead at the scene. Officials are still looking into what caused this fatal collision. No citations or arrests were reported. The incident is under investigation.
