Three Pedestrians Killed in Four Crashes in Las Vegas Just in One Day

By

In Las Vegas, Aug. 9 turned out to be a deadly day for pedestrians. According to a report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, three people were killed and one other was injured in four separate crashes.

One accident occurred around 8:24 a.m. on the edge of a school zone at Brookman Elementary School on East Washington Avenue as a vehicle fatally struck a pedestrian near Mount Hood Street.

A Series of Pedestrian Accidents

In another crash earlier that morning, police said an unidentified female pedestrian was killed as she crossed South Rainbow Boulevard and Palmyra Avenue. She was struck by a Ford pickup truck driven by a 67-year-old man. Police did not suspect impairment was a factor. A short time after that crash at West Flamingo Road and Arville Street, a pedestrian was struck and killed by an older model white pickup truck. In that case, the driver fled the scene.

In the fourth crash, a pedestrian was struck and critically injured near the intersection of J Street and Washington Avenue. A motorist drove from the scene and was located a short distance away. That driver was suspected of driving under the influence and was taken into custody. Police officials are warning drivers to pay more attention to the road to prevent these types of tragedies.

Our deepest sympathies go out to all families that have lost loved ones as a result of these pedestrian accidents. We will hold them in our thoughts and prayers.

Safety Tips for Drivers

Drivers have a duty of care to exercise caution around pedestrians. Motorists are required to yield the right of way to pedestrians who are crossing in marked or unmarked crosswalks. Here are a few safety tips for drivers to help prevent these types of tragic accidents:

  • Never drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
  • Do not drive while distracted
  • Stop for pedestrians at crosswalks and even if they are not in a crosswalk
  • Yield to pedestrians when making a turn
  • Look before opening your door
  • Be careful when you are passing stopped vehicles
  • Slow down and obey the posted speed limit
