Toddler Struck and Killed by Amazon Van in Irvine

By

A 2-year-old girl was struck and killed by an Amazon delivery van on the afternoon of Aug. 16 in an Irvine apartment complex.

According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal collision occurred in the parking lot of the complex in the 300 block of Estancia near lower Peters Canyon and the 261 toll road.

Ongoing Investigation into Amazon Van Fatality in Irvine

The young girl died at the scene of the accident. The driver of the truck remained to speak with the authorities. The cause of the collision is under investigation. But investigators don’t believe drugs or alcohol were a factor in this crash. A third-party contractor operates the van, police said. According to an ABC news report, the blue Amazon van that struck the child was hooked up to a tow truck as investigators collected evidence at the scene.

Neighbors told ABC they have complained several times to management about visibility in the apartment community’s outdoor areas, and also about speeding vehicles. They say the hedges have been trimmed down, but they have not seen the bumps and parking lot signage they have requested. The Irvine Company, which owns the apartment complex, said they are cooperating with the police. Anyone with information is asked to call Irvine police at 949-724-7047.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the child who was tragically killed in this crash. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Liability Issues

In this particular case, there are a number of unanswered questions. What caused this collision? Was the driver of the delivery truck not paying attention or distracted at the time of the crash? Is there a surveillance video of how or why the crash occurred? Depending on the facts and circumstances, one or more parties could be held accountable.

In addition to the driver and his employer, there are circumstances in which the owner/manager of the apartment complex may also be held liable, particularly if the investigation shows that a dangerous condition on their property caused this collision. In such cases, victims’ families would be well advised to contact an experienced Irvine personal injury lawyer who will stay on top of the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
