The incidents of elder abuse, neglect and wrongful death have risen in this country. One of the best ways to protect your loved ones is to be extremely careful when choosing a nursing home. This decision is usually an emotional one and it is also one that all members of the family should partake in, especially the elderly person needing care.

The first step is to determine exactly what level of care your family member needs. Oftentimes the amount of care needed is small and could be provided by a home health aide or in an assisted living facility. The family also needs to determine what the elderly person can afford, what Medicare covers and if there is long-term health insurance or other assets that can be used for this care. A lower priced nursing home is not always a bad one and high priced ones have their share of elder abuse and neglect problems.

A motion for a change of venue has been filed by the defense attorney of an alleged DUI offender who may have caused the death of Angels’ baseball pitcher Nick Adenhart and two others. The Orange County Deputy District Attorney, Susan Price, argued that there is no need to move the fatal Los Angeles personal injury trial and that impartial jurors can be found locally for the trial.

According to a news report in the Ventura County Star, David was driving south on Pacific Coast Highway near Ventura the night of June 28, 2010, when the large truck that had been stopped on the shoulder pulled into the roadway and failed to yield right-of-way to David’s vehicle.

Several people were injured in a Modesto car accident after a suspected drunk driver drove his 2001 Chevy Silverado south in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 in Keyes. According to a news report in the Modesto Bee, California Highway Patrol officials arrested 30-year-old Fernando Martinez on suspicion of felony DUI and felony driving the wrong way causing injuries.

A 58-year-old La Palma man was killed in a Long Beach car accident after his bicycle was struck by a pickup truck. According to a City News Service report, the fatal bicycle collision occurred at the intersection of Carson Street and Woodruff Avenue the night of June 26, 2010. Long Beach police officials say a 70-year-old man driving a 2010 Ford F-150 west on Carson Street crashed into the bicyclist who was also westbound. The bicyclist was taken to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Anyone with information is asked to contact Long Beach police at 562-570-7355.

Neighbors in a San Diego community are concerned that a pit bull involved in a dog bite incident two weeks ago has still not been located. Tina Souza, the woman who was attacked and injured by the dog, is offering a $500 reward for information about the pit bull or its owner, 10news reports. She says that the dog ran through a gate and charged at her when she was taking a walk in the neighborhood. Souza said she tried to defend herself by putting her arm up when the pit bull bit her arm. The dog ran away and was never located.

An accident at a Los Angeles meat packing company resulted in major personal injuries for a worker the morning of June 19, 2010. ABC News reports that the incident occurred at the Jobbers Meat Packing Company in Vernon, California. Officials say the worker somehow fell into the grinder and that his legs were cut off above the knee. He was taken to a local hospital with serious injuries. The accident is under investigation.

My heart goes out to this injured worker. I hope he has not sustained catastrophic job injuries and pray for his quick and complete recovery.

Agueda Quezadas-Gomez, 40, was killed in a Los Angeles car accident the night of June 20, 2010, after the car in which she was a passenger crashed in South El Monte. According to a news report in the Pasadena Star-News, Quezadas-Gomez was a passenger in a 2003 Toyota Corolla driven by 49-year-old Roberto Mendieta. Police suspect Mendieta was under the influence of alcohol and crashed the Toyota into a barrier pole at Peck Road and East Rush Street.

An 87-year-old woman was fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident after she was struck by a large commercial truck while walking in a marked crosswalk. According to a news report in the Daily Breeze, the fatal accident occurred the afternoon of June 21, 2010 at the intersection of Vine Street and Selma Avenue in Hollywood. The woman was apparently walking across the marked crosswalk on her way to the fitness center when she was hit by the big rig. She died at the scene.

A woman was killed in a fiery Los Angeles car accident after her SUV was rear-ended by another vehicle at a traffic light. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Daily News, the victim was in her Infiniti SUV stopped in a turn lane at the intersection of Reseda Boulevard and Devonshire Street the morning of June 21, 2010. Officials say she was waiting for a green light when her SUV was rear-ended by a Mercedes sedan going east on Devonshire at a high rate of speed.
