Woman Killed as She Tries to Help Crash Victim on the 5 Freeway in Downey

By

A good Samaritan was killed on the 5 Freeway in Downey as she attempted to help the driver of a disabled vehicle. According to a City News Service report, the accident occurred just north of the Lakewood Boulevard exit. A Mitsubishi Lancer became disabled in traffic lanes after its driver told officers he struck the center median at Lakewood Boulevard because he was cut off by a gray Chevrolet.

Death and Injuries

The driver of a Honda Pilot, 47-year-old Bruno Rodriguez of Anaheim, stopped an SUV in front of the Mitsubishi and walked with his passenger, 36-year-old Nancy Segoviano, back to the disabled vehicle to check on the driver and his passengers, California Highway Patrol officials said. Rodriguez used the flashlight on his cellphone to warn approaching traffic and Segoviano began walking back to the Honda when the 18-year-old driver of a 2015 Ford Mustang swerved to avoid the Mitsubishi, struck Rodriguez’s right hand and continued further to hit Segoviano. He then crashed into the Honda bearing three children aged 10, 12, and 14.

Segoviano, Rodriguez, and three children were taken to a hospital where Segoviano died. Rodriguez suffered a major injury to his hand. The three children were treated for complaints of pain and were released. The Mustang’s driver, Travis Le, suffered cuts to his left hand. No arrests were reported and alcohol was not a factor in the crash, officials said.

Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone who was involved in this horrific incident. We offer our condolences to Segoviano’s family and wish the injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Protecting Your Rights

In such cases where multiple parties are involved and the incident details may prove complex, it is important to seek the counsel of an experienced personal injury attorney who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that your legal rights and best interests are preserved.

It would be in your best interest not to rush into a settlement with the insurance company before discussing your case with the lawyer. Once you sign a settlement, you may not be able to seek additional compensation if you suffer further losses. An experienced car accident attorney will be able to provide you with more information about pursuing your legal rights.
