Kenneth Prevatte , 52, was killed in a Huntington Beach car accident after a drunk driver struck his bicycle. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal DUI collision occurred at the intersection of Pacific Coast Highway and 8th Street in Sunset Beach the afternoon of July 28, 2012. Officials say Prevatte was struck in the northbound lanes of the Pacific Coast Highway. He was pronounced dead at the scene of crash. The driver, Becki James, 58, of Huntington Beach, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

David Sanders, 30, of San Bernardino was killed in an El Monte car accident and two Caltrans workers suffered injuries after Sanders’ minivan rear-ended a work truck. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the fatal car crash occurred the morning of July 24, 2012 on the westbound 10 Freeway east of Peck Road. Sanders was driving his 2002 Ford Windstar van west on the 10 in a lane that was closed due to construction. A Caltrans utility truck that was carrying two contractors was going in reverse in the same lane. One worker was sitting in the back of the truck picking up orange construction cones. The van rear-ended the truck.

Sanders and his dog died at the scene. The two injured Caltrans workers were transported to a local hospital. They were both employees of Atkins Construction, which is based in Foothill Ranch. This crash has occurred barely two days after another collision involving two drunk drivers that killed two road workers on the 405 Freeway in Torrance.

Daniel Iglesias, 19, was killed in a car accident in Santa Ana after the vehicle in which he was a passenger was involved in a two-car collision. According to The Orange County Register, the incident occurred the afternoon of July 15, 2012. Officials say Iglesias was the sole passenger in a Pontiac Trans Am that collided with a full-sized SUV on McFadden Avenue after the driver of the Pontiac swerved to avoid hitting a white minivan. The minivan did not remain at the scene after the crash. The SUV smashed through the right passenger side of the Pontiac fatally injuring Iglesias. The Pontiac’s driver was transported to an area hospital.

Possible Non-Contact Hit-and-Run

An elderly female passenger in the SUV was also taken to a local hospital with complaints of pain. Three others in the SUV were uninjured. Witnesses told officials that the white minivan was traveling north on Pacific Avenue, which dead-ends at McFadden with a stop sign. When the minivan entered McFadden, the Pontiac swerved to avoid it. The Pontiac then crossed into opposing lanes of traffic and was hit by the eastbound SUV. Police are searching for the driver of the white minivan. Anyone with information is asked to contact Santa Ana police at 714-245-8665.

Robert R. Jauregui, 40, of Pacific Beach was killed in a San Diego motorcycle accident after a piece of landscaping debris struck his face and knocked him off his motorcycle. According to a 10News report, the fatal crash occurred the morning of July 7, 2012. Jauregui was riding a 2011 Harley Davidson on the ramp from eastbound Interstate 8 to northbound state Route 163 when the incident occurred. The motorcycle was found about 100 yards from the downed rider. Jauregui was pronounced dead at the scene.

Lourdes Jauregui, 39, of Cathedral City, was killed in a pedestrian collision, which officials say involved a suspected drunk driver. According to a CBS news report, the fatal DUI collision occurred near the intersection of Converse Road and Date Palm Drive in Cathedral City, early morning on July 7, 2012. Police say the vehicle that struck Jauregui was driven by James Coley, 49, of Newport Beach. Coley showed signs of intoxication and was booked on suspicion of driving under the influence. The investigation is ongoing.

A 23-year-old woman was killed and her brother was injured in a Los Angeles car accident involving a suspected wrong-way drunk driver whose blood alcohol level, officials say, was more than three times the legal limit. According to news reports, the fatal DUI collision occurred at Parthenia Street and Corbin Avenue in Northridge, the night of June 25, 2012. Officials say a 50-year-old woman, who was driving her vehicle eastbound in a westbound lane on Parthenia, plowed into a Honda carrying the victims. The victim of this crash was fatally injured and her brother suffered unknown injuries. The female driver of the other vehicle had a blood alcohol level of .22. She is facing DUI and vehicular manslaughter charges.

Osmara Mesa, 5, was killed and her sister and mother, remained in critical condition after a Santa Ana car accident that was caused by a suspected DUI driver who left the scene of the crash. According to a news article in The Orange County Register, the fatal accident occurred at the intersection of 17th and Spurgeon streets, the morning of June 23, 2012. Police say the mother and her two children were walking in a marked crosswalk when 33-year-old Jessica Louise Cowan drove her Lexus through a red light and struck the pedestrians. Cowan tried to get away, but was stopped by a driver who witnessed the crash. Cowan is facing several charges including felony hit-and-run, felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Tragic DUI Collision

Osmara died at the scene. Her mother, 45, suffered severe head trauma and is in critical condition after this Santa Ana pedestrian accident. Her 6-year-old sister also suffered head injuries, but is expected to survive. Cowan was driving 60 mph or more at the time as she headed west on 17th Street. Officials say they would not have Cowan in custody now had a female driver not cut off and trapped Cowan at Main and 17th streets.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family members of Osmara Mesa who are grieving the loss of this little girl and are caring for two other critically injured family members. This family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I wish the two severely injured victims the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. I commend the driver who saw the hit-and-run car accident and courageously stopped the driver who tried to get away. This person is truly a hero!

A man has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a nursing home alleging that the assisted living facility neglected his elderly mother causing her death. According to a CBS news article, Ronald Corn filed a lawsuit in connection with the death of his mother Loretta Hooker. The lawsuit states that Hooker became a resident at the Sunrise Sterling Canyon Assisted Living Center in Valencia in July 2007 as she suffered from dementia, weakness and fragility. As Hooker’s condition became better she was transferred to a part of the home that was designated for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Gregory Jay Pflum, 52, of Fullerton, was killed in a Fullerton car accident when a 2011 Ford Fusion struck him as he crossed the street. According to The Orange County Register, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred on Commonwealth Avenue in Fullerton, the night of June 16, 2012. Officials say Pflum was crossing the road from north to south when the eastbound Ford struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The male driver and female passenger in the Ford were questioned and released. It is not clear if any citations will result from the collision, but investigators are looking for witnesses and more information about the circumstances of this fatal collision.

A 53-year-old man was fatally injured in a Los Angeles car accident after the bicycle he was riding was struck by an SUV whose driver fled the scene. According to a City News Service report, the hit-and-run crash occurred during the early morning hours of June 8, 2012 near the intersection of Nordhoff Street and Gaviota Avenue. Both the bicyclist and the SUV were eastbound on Nordhoff. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene of the collision. Witnesses told police that the victim was thrown onto the windshield of the SUV, which was described as a dark Ford or Chevrolet. The bicyclist then fell into a planter in front of an auto parts store. Officials are still looking for the hit-and-run driver.
