According to a news report in The Press Enterprise, Senator Ricardo Lara, a Democrat from Bell Gardens, has introduced legislation that requires charter bus operators to conduct safety briefings and to have labeled emergency exits like those on airplanes.

Nine people were injured when a driver ran a red light and hit an Orange County Transportation Authority bus the night of June 3, 2014.

The Orange County Register reports that the incident occurred at the intersection of 17th Street and Fairview Road.

Officials say the OCTA bus was traveling west on 17th Street when a Toyota going north on Fairview ran a red light and struck the bus.

A school bus accident in Anaheim Hills has left three students and the bus driver seriously injured after the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into trees the afternoon of April 24, 2014. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury crash, involving an Orange Unified School District bus was reported on Nohl Ranch Canyon Road near East Walnut Canyon Road. Anaheim police officials say the bus left the roadway and struck a tree and a lamppost. Investigators are not clear why the driver lost control of the bus.

At least 14 people were injured, one seriously, when a Riverside Transit Authority bus, a car and a tow truck crashed the morning of December 19, 2013. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the incident occurred at Highway 74 and Briggs Road in Romoland. California Highway Patrol officials said the bus was heading west approaching Briggs Road in rainy weather when it slid and spun sideways striking a Pontiac Bonneville that was traveling in the opposite direction. A tow truck following the Bonneville also hit the car.

A 48-year old woman driving the car suffered major injuries and was transported to a regional hospital for treatment. Fire officials said 14 people including the car’s driver were transported to hospitals. Two suffered serious injuries and 12 others suffered minor to moderate injuries. The cause of the crash is under investigation. Investigators are also performing a mechanical inspection of the bus.

Eleven people suffered injuries in a bus crash after a Riverside Transit Authority bus crashed off Interstate 215 in Riverside. The Press-Enterprise reports that the crash occurred the morning of March 27, 2013 at the Box Springs Road onramp to the southbound Interstate 215. California Highway Patrol officials said an SUV collided with the bus. Authorities said 11 people on board the bus were being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The remaining 18 on the bus were uninjured. Officials are still investigating the incident.

Traffic Collisions in Riverside

There were 20 fatalities and 1,396 injuries reported as a result of traffic collisions in the city of Riverside, according to CHP’s 2010 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). Also, during the same year, 190 people died and 7,632 were injured as a result of traffic accidents in Riverside County.

October 15, 2012–Malibu, CA– According to a CBS News report, an unidentified woman was killed in a Malibu bicycle accident on Saturday when she collided with a Metro bus.

The accident took place on Pacific Coast Highway near Puerco Canyon Road around 2:00 p.m. The woman was declared dead at the scene by rescue workers. Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident. No charges have been filed at this time.

Margarita McIntosh, 75, was killed in a Ventura pedestrian accident, which officials say involved a school bus driver who was under the influence of drugs. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the fatal collision occurred at the intersection of Woodland Street and Brookshire Avenue, the afternoon of September 26, 2012. Officials say the school bus carrying 11 children was heading north on Brookshire when it made a left turn on Woodland striking the elderly pedestrian who was walking in a crosswalk.

McIntosh was transported in critical condition to an area hospital where she died. The school bus driver, 54-year-old Joanne Madaule, was under the influence of unspecified drugs at the time, California Highway Patrol officials said. She was arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and for being under the influence of a controlled substance. The investigation is ongoing.

A train accident involving a Metro Blue Line train and a Metro bus in downtown Los Angeles left at least 32 people injured the morning of August 27, 2012. According to a City News Service report, the injury crash occurred at San Pedro Street and Washington Boulevard. Officials say 32 people were hurt, one seriously. Twenty people were transported to the hospital for examination. None of those injuries is believed to have been life-threatening. The bus, which was operating on line 51, was traveling south on San Pedro Street when the accident occurred. Officials are still looking into what caused this accident.
