Tractor-Trailer Accident in Agoura Hills Kills Two

By

Joshua Dubon, 23, and Richard Vasques, 24, were killed in a Los Angeles car accident early morning on July 2, 2010 after their car struck a tractor-trailer on Highway 101 in Agoura Hills. According to a news report in the Ventura County Star, the fatal crash occurred in the westbound lanes of the highway between Kanan and Reyes Adobe roads. One more person in the car, 21-year-old Soel Dubon, sustained major injuries in the crash. California Highway Patrol officials say all three victims were from Santa Paula.

Joshua Dubon was the driver of a compact car, which crashed into the rear of the large truck, parked on the right side of the road. Apparently, the truck driver, 45-year-old Donald Swisher, had stopped on the side of the highway because he thought he had a flat tire. Moments after Swisher got back into his big rig, after checking the tires, Dubon’s car collided with the truck, CHP officials say. Joshua Dubon and Vasques, his front passenger died at the scene. Soel Dubon was extricated from the wreckage and transported to an area hospital. An investigation is ongoing.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Joshua Dubon and Richard Vasques for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. I also wish Soel Dubon the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep these victims and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there was one death and 82 injuries involving car accidents in Agoura Hills. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents during the same year.

Truck Accident Causes and Liability Issues

Based on this news account, it is possible that the tractor-trailer was illegally parked on the freeway. If that was the case, the truck driver and his employer, the trucking company, may be held legally or at least partially responsible for the fatalities and injuries here. Joshua Dubon, Soel Dubon and Richard Vasques may have legally valid claims against the truck driver and the trucking company.

The Dubon and Vasques families would be well-advised to seek the counsel of a reputed Los Angeles truck accident lawyer sooner than later. The trucking company no doubt, by this time, has their insurance company, investigators and legal team working on this case. The victims and their families would certainly benefit from having an experienced injury lawyer on their side, fighting for their rights and looking out for their best interests.

What safety tips would you offer motorists in terms of driving safely in the proximity of large trucks?

I was so saddened to hear that these young men lost their lives this way. I used to go to church with them, in Oxnard. I especially remember Richard, his big grin & contagious happiness. Richard was a very nice young man, who cared so much about his loved ones. He will be truly missed. God bless he & his family. May the word of the Lord help everyone cope while going through this tough time.
