A woman who was riding an electric scooter suffered serious injuries after she was struck by a driver in downtown Los Angeles.
According to an NBC news report, the woman was riding the rented scooter against traffic in the one-way eastbound lanes of West Fourth Street just past South Main Street the afternoon of Oct. 27 when an eastbound 2020 Chevrolet Spark struck her head-on.
Video Footage Captured Collision
Security camera video apparently captured the horrific crash showing the woman getting launched into the air and landing head first on the sidewalk. A shirtless driver of the Chevrolet got out of the vehicle after the collision and fled the scene, officials said. Paramedics took the woman to an area hospital with serious injuries, but they have said she is expected to survive and is in stable condition.
Investigators later determined that the vehicle that struck the woman was reported stolen out of the LAPD Wilshire Division area. The driver who fled the scene was described as a 20- to 25-year-old man, 5-foot-6 to 5-foot-10, weighing between 150 and 175 pounds with a tattoo of unknown writing on the right side of the chest. He was last seen wearing gray pants with a possible camouflage pattern. Anyone with information is asked to contact LAPD Central Traffic investigators at 213-833-3713.
We are relieved to note that the victim, in this case, is expected to survive. We wish her the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.
Laws and Liability Issues
It is illegal for motorists to leave the scene of an injury or fatal collision under California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) regardless of whose fault the crash may have been. Drivers are required to stop immediately, remain at the scene, exchange information with other parties, and most importantly, get help for the injured victim. This might be as simple as calling 911 so the injured person gets prompt medical attention, which could save that person’s life.
Injured hit and run victims are often left facing mounting medical expenses, lost income, and other financial challenges in addition to having to recover from serious injuries and potentially suffering long-term or lifelong disabilities. Injured victims in such cases would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles hit and run lawyer who will stay on top of the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
