Water District Worker Killed in Riverside Car Accident

By

Richard Flores, 24, was killed in a Riverside car accident when he was hit by a vehicle while applying street markings. According to a news report in The Press-Enterprise, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred along Valle Avenue, near Sixth Street, in Beaumont on June 28, 2011. Flores was working for the Beaumont-Cherry Valley Water District. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. The driver of the truck was hospitalized for a reportedly unrelated condition. It is unclear at this time what caused the crash or if the driver will be cited.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of Richard Flores following this fatal job injury. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), two people were killed and 71 injured in Beaumont car accidents. During that same year, there were 220 fatalities and 8,561 injuries reported as a result of Riverside County car accidents.

What Caused This Fatal Car Accident?

There are a number of questions that must be answered during the investigation. Why was the driver unable to avoid the collision? Was the driver distracted or speeding? Was the driver given proper warning that work was being done on the roadway? Were there traffic cones or a lighted sign warning motorists that a worker was on the road? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine how or why this tragic accident occurred.

Liability Issues

In this particular case, Flores’ family will be entitled to receive workers compensation benefits from his employer. In addition, Flores’ family can also file a wrongful death claim against the at-fault motorist seeking compensation. A wrongful death claim seeks compensation for medical and funeral expenses, lost future income and benefits such as healthcare and pension, and loss of companionship.

Families of deceased victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
