Two Injured in Orange County Car Accident

By

Two drivers were injured in an Orange County car accident when a 91-year-old woman veered into oncoming traffic. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the head-on collision occurred at the intersection of Brookhurst Street and Edinger Avenue in Fountain Valley, the evening of August 15, 2011. A 21-year-old Santa Ana man was driving a Ford F-150 as an elderly woman let her Buick Le Sabre cross the center divider and strike his vehicle head-on. The driver of the Buick suffered serious injuries and the driver of the pickup was hospitalized as well. A third vehicle was also involved but that driver was uninjured.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victims of this car accident. I wish them both a complete and speedy recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), three people were killed and 443 were injured in Fountain Valley car accidents. During that same year, 141 fatalities and 13,373 injuries occurred due to Orange County car accidents.

What Caused This Car Crash?

It is not clear what caused the elderly driver to veer into oncoming traffic. California Vehicle Code Section 21651 (a): “Whenever a highway has been divided into two or more roadways by means of intermittent barriers or by means of a dividing section of not less than two feet in width, either unpaved or delineated by curbs, double-parallel lines, or other markings on the roadway, it is unlawful…to drive any vehicle over, upon, or across the dividing section.”

There are also other questions that remain unanswered at his point. Did the elderly driver have a valid license? Did she have the capacity to drive? Did she suffer from any medical issues? Was she under the influence of any prescription medication? Was she distracted in some way? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what caused the driver to veer into oncoming lanes of traffic.

Liability Issues

Injured victims of negligent drivers may pursue financial compensation for their losses by filing a personal injury claim. Losses that may be covered include medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization and physical therapy. Car accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Orange County personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable.
