Three Killed in Fiery Rialto Car Accident

By

Paul Larios, 35, Ashley Gilroy, 33, and Marlee Maldonado, 8, were all killed in a fiery multi-vehicle car accident in Rialto on the evening of Aug. 1.

According to a KTLA news report, Larios was driving a black Jeep Cherokee at a high rate of speed and sideswiped a Chevy Silverado near Willow Avenue and Valley Boulevard.

After the initial collision, the Jeep continued speeding and swerving down Valley Boulevard until it hit the back of the Sorento carrying Gilroy and Maldonado near the intersection with Riverside Boulevard.

Ongoing Investigation into Fatal Rialto Car Accident

Because of the Jeep’s excessive speed, officials said the Kia struck the back of a Honda and four other vehicles were involved in the crash. The Kia caught fire along with the Honda it crashed into. Gilroy and Maldonado were trapped inside the Kia while the vehicle was on fire. Larios, Gilroy and Maldonado all died at the scene.

Two other drivers were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Anyone with information is asked to contact Rialto police at 909-644-6025. The investigation is ongoing.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family of Ashley Gilroy and Marlee Maldonado for their tremendous loss. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the other injured victims. We wish them a speedy and complete recovery.

Laws and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Jeep may have been driving at an excessive and/or unsafe rate of speed at the time of the crash. California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) states: “No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic and on surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers the safety of persons or property.”

In such cases, families of deceased victims may be able to seek compensation by filing a wrongful death lawsuit for damages including but not limited to medical expenses, funeral costs lost future income, pain and suffering, and loss of love, care, and companionship. An experienced San Bernardino car accident lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
