Three Injured Los Angeles DUI Collision

By

Three people were injured in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, was caused by a drunk driver, the night of July 13, 2011. According to a City News Service report, the injury crash occurred at the intersection of Victory Boulevard and Wilkinson Avenue in the Valley Glen area of Los Angeles. The crash involved a taxicab and two other vehicles. Three people including the suspect were transported to a local hospital with injuries, but they are all expected to survive. Police arrested one man on suspicion of driving under the influence a day after the crash.

My heart goes out to the injured victims of this crash. I wish them the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

DUI Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 105 fatalities and 2,252 injuries occurred involving DUI collisions in Los Angeles. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 258 people died and 4,832 were injured in alcohol-related crashes during the same year.

California DUI Laws

Based on this news report, it appears that one of the drivers, who was under the influence, may have caused this street intersection crash. It is against California law to operate with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 percent or higher. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.”

Liability Issues

I trust officials are also looking into whether the driver may have run a red light or failed to yield right-of-way at the intersection leading to the accident. It is not clear which one of the drivers caused the accident. If the at-fault motorist was on the job at the time, his or her employer can also be held liable for the resulting injuries and damages.

In such cases, an injured victim can file a personal injury claim seeking compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other damages. An experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will better advise car accident victims about their legal rights and options.
