Teenage Skateboarder in Critical Condition After South LA Hit-and-Run Crash

LAPD officials are asking for the public’s help to find a hit-and-run driver who left an 18-year-old severely injured in the Vermont Vista neighborhood of South Los Angeles the night of July 16.

According to a KTLA news report, the incident occurred near the intersection of West Colden Avenue and South Figueroa Street.

Ongoing Investigation

A driver turning west on Colden Avenue from Figueroa Street collided with an 18-year-old on a skateboard traveling in the same direction on Colden Avenue. Police said the impact caused the victim to be thrown off the skateboard and onto the roadway. The driver did not stop and continued west on Colden Avenue. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the victim to a regional hospital in critical condition.

Detectives from the South Traffic Division said they are still in the early stages of the investigation and will provide more information on the suspect and the vehicle description when it becomes available. Officials are also offering a reward of up to $25,000 for community members who can provide information leading the suspect’s identification and arrest. Anyone with information is asked to contact LAPD officials at 323-421-3247.

Our thoughts and prayers are with this injured victim. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Under California law, leaving the scene of an injury or fatal crash is against the law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.” Motorists are required to stop and remain at the scene regardless of who was at fault for the incident.

Hit-and-run victims and their families are often faced with significant challenges including mounting medical bills and other expenses relating to the accident and treatment of injuries. In such cases, victims of hit-and-run crashes would be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles hit and run lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure their legal rights and best interests are protected.
