Two women, ages 22 and 23, were seriously injured in a San Francisco car accident, which officials say, was caused by a suspected drunk driver. According to a news report in the San Francisco Examiner, the injury collision occurred early morning on September 18, 2010 at the intersection of Fulton Street and Arguello Boulevard. Police say a 52-year-old male driver rear-ended the car carrying the women, which was eastbound on Fulton Street. Both women suffered life-threatening injuries. Car Accidents

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 35 deaths and 3,577 injuries involving car accidents in San Francisco. Of those, eight deaths and 309 injuries involved DUI collisions.

DUI Laws

Driving under the influence is a serious crime under California law. According to California Vehicle Code Section 23152 (a): “It is unlawful for any person who is under the influence of any alcoholic beverage or drug, or under the combined influence of any alcoholic beverage and drug, to drive a vehicle.” Under the same section, it is also illegal to drive with a blood alcohol level of 0.08 percent or higher.

Victims’ Claim for Compensation

In such cases, it would be in the best interests of injured victims to seek the counsel of an experienced San Francisco personal injury lawyer, who has a successful track record of holding drunk drivers financially responsible for the injuries and damages they cause. Injured victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, surgery, rehabilitation and continuing treatment costs.

A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise injured victims about how their own car insurance policy applies to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured. In these types of collisions, the at-fault driver could be held civilly and criminally liable for his or her actions.
