Pedestrians Critically Injured in Two Separate Orange County Car Accidents

By

Two pedestrians are in critical condition after being involved in two unrelated Orange County car accidents within four miles of each other. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, one of the pedestrian accidents occurred at Knott and Lincoln avenues, and the other occurred at Crescent Way and Lincoln Avenue. Both accidents occurred in Anaheim the night of May 5, 2011.

The pedestrian accident that occurred at Knott and Lincoln did not involve alcohol and the driver responsible for the collision remained at the scene of the crash. The injury accident that occurred at Crescent Way and Lincoln involved a hit-and-run driver. The authorities are searching for a dark, 2000 or newer Toyota Camry. Like the victim of the other accident, the female victim of this hit-and-run accident suffered life-threatening injuries.

My thoughts and prayers are with both victims of these serious injury pedestrian accidents. I wish them both a complete and speedy recovery.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 73 were injured in Anaheim pedestrian accidents. During that same year, there were 31 fatalities and 785 injuries reported due to Orange County pedestrian accidents.

Crosswalk Laws

Under California law, motorists are required to yield right-of-way to pedestrians at intersections and crosswalks. California Vehicle Code Section 21950 states: “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.” The same section also states that the driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk “shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of a vehicle or take any other action relating to the operating of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.”

Additionally, the authorities are searching for the driver and vehicle involved in the collision that occurred at Crescent Way and Lincoln Avenue. Leaving the scene of an injury car accident is not only illegal, but it is also an inhumane and irresponsible act.
