Fatal Orange County Car Accident

By

Boon Soon Yang, 71, was killed in an Orange County car accident when she was struck by her own daughter’s car, which was involved in a accident with another vehicle. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred in the 7200 block of Melrose Street in Buena Park the morning of January 3, 2011.

Yang was apparently waiting for her daughter, 47-year-old Sung S. Lim, to pick her up when her daughter’s Audi A5 Quattro was struck by a Honda Civic. The Audi was attempting to turn left into a driveway when it was hit by the westbound Honda driven by 19-year-old Priya D. Shah. The impact of the collision forced the Audi onto the sidewalk and fatally struck Yang. No arrests were made as investigators are looking into who was at fault for the car accident.

I offer my deepest condolences to everybody who knew and loved Boon Soon Yang for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. I can only imagine what her daughter must be going through following this horrific car accident. Please keep this family in your thoughts and prayers.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), three people were killed and 22 were injured in Buena Park pedestrian accidents. During that same year, there were 31 fatalities and 785 injuries were reported involving Orange County pedestrian accidents.

What Caused This Fatal Car Accident?

Police are trying to determine which one of the drivers caused this fatal accident. Did one of the drivers fail to yield right-of-way? According to California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a): “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.” I trust officials are also looking into whether speed, driver distraction or any other form of negligence may have caused or contributed to this fatal car accident.
