Officials Release Surveillance Video in Fatal Downtown LA Hit and Run Crash

By

Los Angeles police officials have released surveillance video and images in their search for a hit and run driver who fatally struck a pedestrian in downtown Los Angeles on Sept. 27. According to a KTLA news report, officials were called to investigate the incident at the intersection of Fourth and Central Streets. A dark-colored SUV was traveling south on Central Street when it collided with the pedestrian who was crossing on Fourth Street.

Surveillance video released by LAPD shows the SUV turn around after the collision and then drive away. The driver did not stop or render aid to the victim. Paramedics responded to the scene and transported the victim to a local hospital with severe injuries. The victim, identified only as a man, died from his injuries on Oct. 1. A reward of up to $50,000 has been offered for information leading to the apprehension and conviction of the responsible person. Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD detective at 213-833-3713.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased victim for their tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

What the Law States

Based on this news report, the victim was crossing the street when the SUV struck him. It is apparent from the surveillance video that the SUV’s driver knew he hit the pedestrian, but decided to turn around and flee the scene of a major injury crash. Under California Vehicle Code 20001 (a), it is illegal to leave the scene of an injury or fatal crash.

Drivers are required to remain at the scene, wait until officials arrive, exchange pertinent information with others involved and most importantly, get help for the injured victim. This assistance might be something as simple as calling 911 so the victim gets prompt medical attention and care, which could make the difference between life and death in these cases. Further, leaving someone lying in the roadway exposes him or her to further injury.

Justice for Victims and Families

Injured victims of hit-and-run crashes and families that have lost loved ones in these senseless incidents deserve justice. They are also often saddled with significant medical expenses and other financial burdens. It is critical that victims and their families contact an experienced Los Angeles hit and run lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to advise victims about how their own auto insurance policy might apply to an incident where the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured.
