Man Killed in Sun Valley Motorcycle Accident

By

A 24-year-old Anaheim man suffered fatal injuries after a large truck struck and killed him after being thrown off his motorcycle. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the semi’s driver did not stop and another man was severely injured on the freeway. The motorcyclist was killed on the southbound side of the 5 Freeway in Sun Valley late night on July 19, California Highway Patrol officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The other man, 22, was transported to an area hospital with major injuries.

Ongoing Investigation

CHP detectives said at least two men were out on the freeway right before the big rig struck the 24-year-old. Both likely were down in lanes following a prior crash. But officials did not have information about how many vehicles were involved in the earlier crash although detectives believe the victim who was killed had been riding a motorcycle. The big rig left the scene. It is described as having a red cab and driving in a darkly lit area of the freeway when it hit the victim. CHP officials asked anyone with information about the crash to call the Altadena station at 626-296-8100.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of the deceased victim. We also wish the injured victim the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Based on this news report, it is unclear as to how this horrific crash occurred. There are a number of unanswered questions here. How did the motorcyclist get thrown off his vehicle? What was the involvement of the two men who were ejected on to the roadway? Who was at fault for the initial crash? Did the driver of the big rig know that he had struck someone?

Compensation Issues

Drivers who are involved in an injury or fatal crash are required under the law to remain at the scene, wait for officials to arrive, exchange pertinent information with all parties involved and most importantly, render aid to the victims. In such cases, the at-fault drivers and potentially, their employers, could be held liable for the injuries, damages and losses caused.

Injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost wages, hospitalization, rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. Families that have lost loved ones may be able to seek compensation by filing a wrongful death lawsuit. An experienced Los Angeles motorcycle accident lawyer will be able to advise injured victims regarding their legal rights and options.
