Pedestrian Injured in San Diego Car Accident

By

An elderly woman was seriously injured in a San Diego car accident, after she was hit by a car while crossing the street in the Rancho Penasquitos area, the North County Times reports. The pedestrian accident occurred on Aldohia Street the afternoon of December 10, 2009. The woman, who was crossing Aldohia, was struck by a westbound Ford Explorer. She suffered a fractured pelvis and a broken leg. San Diego police officials are looking into what caused this injury pedestrian accident.

My heart goes out to this injured 70-year-old woman who has sustained serious injuries. I wish her the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep this injured victim in your prayers.

San Diego Pedestrian Accident Statistics

There were 25 deaths and 575 injuries in San Diego as a result of pedestrian accidents, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In San Diego County as a whole, 51 fatalities and 1,068 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents. Also in San Diego County, car accidents claimed 268 lives and injured 14,641 people during the same year.

This news report does not clearly state where this pedestrian was crossing the street at the time of the injury collision. If she was walking in a marked or unmarked crosswalk (at an intersection) at the time of the accident, the motorist should have stopped and yielded right-of-way. As with many pedestrian accidents, who had the right-of-way will very likely be one of the central issues in this accident investigation.

California Vehicle Code Relating to Crosswalks

California Vehicle Code Section 21950 states: “The driver of a vehicle shall yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian crossing the roadway within any marked crosswalk or within any unmarked crosswalk at an intersection.” The same section also states that the driver of a vehicle approaching a pedestrian within any marked or unmarked crosswalk “shall exercise all due care and shall reduce the speed of a vehicle or take any other action relating to the operating of the vehicle as necessary to safeguard the safety of the pedestrian.”
