What to Do After a Bus Accident

If you have been involved in a bus accident, make sure that you receive prompt medical attention. Do not decline medical attention if emergency personnel offer it at the scene. If you have been injured, go to the emergency room or hospital right away. Get as much information as possible from the bus driver including his or her name, the vehicle’s license plate number, insurance details, etc. Be sure to contact an experienced Los Angeles bus accident lawyer who has a successful track record of handling similar cases.

Liability Issues

Bus companies are common carriers and therefore, owe passengers the utmost duty of care. Bus operators are required to hire experienced or capable drivers with good driving records. They must ensure that the vehicles are in good working condition and that they are routinely serviced and repaired.

In such cases, there are a number of questions to ask. Was the driver inexperienced? Was he or she impaired at the time of the crash? Did driver distraction or inattention play a part? Was the driver negligent in any way? If the bus driver caused the accident, both the driver and his or her employer can be held liable for the injuries, damages, and losses caused.

Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, pain and suffering and emotional distress. An experienced Los Angeles bus accident lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
