At least two people were injured on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2009 in a San Francisco train accident when a bus struck an F-line streetcar.
The San Francisco Examiner reported that the mirror of a 71-Haight/Noriega bus struck the streetcar which was travelling in the opposite direction at about 11:30 a.m. A passenger on the bus suffered slight personal injuries but refused aid, Muni spokesman Judson True said.
I’m thankful that no one else was injured in the California bus accident but what’s worrying is that the accident was only the first of two accidents involving San Francisco Muni carriages in the same day.
Just two hours later at 1:30 p.m., a San Francisco Muni driver-in-training struck a light pole, two trees, two parking meters and a building in Japantown. Luckily, no one was injured in the train accident. Service on the 3-Jackson line was disrupted though as the accident affected the overhead wires which powers the trolleys. Muni and police officials are investigating both accidents.
Injuries Involving Muni Accidents Have Tripled
A Muni spokesperson earlier said that Muni vehicles had been involved in at least 956 collisions this year. Data from the Federal Transit Administration showed that injuries arising from accidents involving San Francisco Muni trains have more than tripled in five years with 21 passengers injured in 2003 compared to 70 passengers last year. As of August this year, 68 people have already been injured in light-rail train accidents in San Francisco. In fact, in August alone, there were four accidents involving Muni trains in a span of just two weeks. Two people were seriously injured while two others were killed.
Obviously, city and transportation officials need to step up their efforts to provide a reliable and safe transit system – not just for passengers of trains, but for motorists and pedestrians who share the road with them.
