Anthony Alexander Morales Perez, 19, was killed in a bicycle accident in Baldwin Park. According to a news report in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, police officers responded to the crash on Los Angeles Street west of Bresee Avenue the night of July 4. The collision occurred when the bicyclist who was westbound on Los Angeles Street attempted to make a left turn onto Bresee Avenue.

A Toyota Corolla, which was also on Los Angeles Street, struck the bicyclist. The driver was not injured. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in this fatal collision. Anyone with more information is urged to contact Baldwin Park police at 626-960-1955.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of Perez for their tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 783 bicyclists killed in traffic crashes in the United States in 2017. In Los Angeles County as a whole, in 2015, 34 people died and 4,158 were injured as a result of bicycle accidents. Also, according to numbers compiled by Biking in LA, 62 people were struck and killed while riding bicycles on Southern California streets in 2017. Of those deaths, 26 were in Los Angeles County.

Potential Causes and Compensation Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the accident occurred at a street intersection as the bicyclist was attempting to make a left turn. In such cases, it is important to look into who had the right of way. It is also critical to examine facts such as the involvement of alcohol and/or drugs and whether distracted driving or reckless vehicle operation were factors in the collision.

In such cases, the at-fault parties may be held financially responsible for the injuries, damages and losses caused. In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, families of deceased victims can file a wrongful death lawsuit seeking compensation for damages such as medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering, and loss of love, care and companionship.

An experienced Los Angeles bicycle accident lawyer will be able to stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that the family’s legal rights and best interests are protected.
