A Tragic Hit-and-Run Car Accident

First, I would like to offer my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Federico Porras for their tragic, heartbreaking and sudden loss. My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved this man. Please keep them in your prayers.

I also hope the hit-and-run driver who left the seriously injured Porras on the roadway and fled the scene of this fatal motorcycle accident is apprehended and brought to justice. Anyone who has information about this accident should call police. The Porras family deserves justice and deserves to know what happened. The victim’s family deserves that closure.

California Car Accident Laws

Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious crime in California. Violators can be charged with a felony and even face jail time where death or serious injuries are involved. According to California Vehicle Code section 20001: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Whether you’re in a hurry, whether you are injured or having a panic attack or simply scared – none of those is an excuse for leaving the scene of an accident. It is the motorist’s duty to remain at the scene of the crash, provide identification, contact information and car insurance details and also get help for the injured party so they can get prompt medical attention.

Porras’ family would be well-advised to consult with a reputed Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will explain their legal rights and options to them. A knowledgeable car accident attorney will also be able to tell them how their own vehicle insurance policy will apply in a hit-and-run case or in an accident where the at-fault party does not have sufficient insurance coverage or lacks insurance altogether. A skilled personal injury lawyer will also study every facet of the case and investigate whether other factors such as a dangerous roadway may have caused or contributed to the accident.
