Pedestrian Killed in Downtown Los Angeles Hit and Run Crash

By

A 78-year-old man identified as Byung Gyu Yu was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Downtown Los Angeles early morning on Aug. 10. According to a KABC news report, the collision was captured on surveillance video. LAPD responded to the call near Third Street and Union Avenue. They said Yu was crossing the street when an SUV struck him and fled the scene. Yu died from his injuries. Officials said the man lived at the nearby senior living facility.

LAPD officials said Yu was walking in a crosswalk at the time of the crash. But, they say, the camera does not show who had the right of way at the time. Police are looking for a gray 2012-2015 Chevy Trailblazer SUV, which may have had damage to the front hood and a possibly broken windshield or the driver’s side window. Detectives are also looking at surveillance video from a Metro bus, which was in the area when the crime occurred. They are hoping to find new leads on the driver and the hit-and-run vehicle.

We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family members of Byung Gyu Yu for their tragic loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

LA Hit-and-Run Crashes

According to a recent NBC news report, there were more than 28,000 hit-and-run crashes in Los Angeles County in the year 2015. During that year, it was reported that about 50 percent of all car accidents in the county involved a hit-and-run driver. The national average for hit-and-run crashes is 11 percent, according to the American Automobile Association.

Under California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a), it is illegal to leave the scene of an injury or fatal car accident. Motorists are required under the law to stop immediately and remain at the scene of the crash, exchange information with others involved, and more importantly, render aid to the injured victims.

Justice for Victims’ Families

We hope the driver, in this case, is apprehended and brought to justice. Eyewitnesses are crucial when it comes to hit-and-run crashes. Most hit-and-run drivers have been apprehended thanks to members of the public who come forward with tips. If your loved one has been killed in a hit-and-run crash, it is important that you contact an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer who has handled similar cases and helped families obtain fair compensation for their losses. An experienced attorney will be able to advise families about how the uninsured motorist clause of their own auto insurance policy might apply to an incident where the at-fault driver may not be identified or apprehended.
