Laws and Liability Issues
Leaving the scene of an injury car accident is a violation of California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a). All motorists are required under the law to stop immediately at the scene of a crash, wait for the authorities to arrive and exchange pertinent information with other parties involved in the collision. Most importantly, they are required to render aid to the injured victims because in such situations, prompt medical attention and treatment can make the difference between life and death.
Injured victims of hit-and-run crashes are often left facing a number of expenses relating to medical costs and lost wages. This is especially a challenge when a driver has not been apprehended or identified. In such cases, an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer will be able to advise victims about how the uninsured motorist clause of their own auto insurance policy could apply.
If and when the driver is apprehended, he or she can also be held financially responsible for the injuries and damages caused. Injured victims can then seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities and pain and suffering. An experienced Los Angeles hit and run lawyer will be able to advise victims and their families regarding their legal rights and options.
