Los Angeles Car Accident Kills Mother and Daughter

By

A mother and her daughter were killed in a Los Angeles car accident when a car hit them as they stood on the sidewalk. According to a news report in the Los Angeles Times, the fatal pedestrian accident occurred at the intersection of Crenshaw Boulevard and Coliseum Street in Leimert Park, the afternoon of November 6, 2010. A Volkswagen Beetle and a Chevrolet pickup collided at the intersection. The Volkswagen then crashed into the 89-year-old woman and her daughter. The elderly woman died at the scene of the car accident, while the daughter, believed to be in her 60s, died at a nearby hospital later that night. The driver of the pickup truck was cited for failing to yield right-of-way.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the family and friends of the two women killed in this tragic pedestrian accident. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 104 people were killed and 2,716 were injured in Los Angeles pedestrian accidents. In Los Angeles County as a whole, 214 fatalities and 4,985 injuries were reported as a result of pedestrian accidents during the same year.

What Caused This Fatal Accident?

Based on this news report, the driver of the pickup truck was cited for failure to yield right-of-way while making a left turn. California Vehicle Code Section 21801 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle intending to turn to the left or to complete a U-turn upon a highway, or to turn left into public or private property, or an alley, shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching from the opposite direction which are close enough to constitute a hazard at any time during the turning movement, and shall continue to yield the right-of-way to the approaching vehicles until the left turn or U-turn can be made with reasonable safety.”

Liability Issues

In cases where negligence or wrongdoing is involved, the family of a deceased victim can file a wrongful death claim seeking compensation for medical and funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. The victim’s family would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay on top of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
