Los Angeles Car Accident Critically Injures Teen Bicyclist

By

A 15-year-old boy was injured in a Los Angeles car accident when a car struck his bicycle, the afternoon of June 3, 2011. According to a report in The Whittier Daily News, The bicycle accident occurred on Alondra Boulevard, near Pioneer Boulevard, in Norwalk. The young victim was riding east when a car travelling in the same direction hit him. He sustained critical injuries and had to undergo surgery. The female driver of the car remained at the scene of the crash. Officials are investigating what caused the crash and who was at fault.

My thoughts and prayers are with the injured victim of this horrific bicycle accident. I wish him a complete and speedy recovery.

Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 20 were injured in Norwalk bicycle accidents. During that same year, 33 fatalities and 3,315 injuries occurred as a result of Los Angeles County bicycle accidents.

What Caused This Tragic Bicycle Accident?

Based on this news report, it is not clear what caused this major injury accident. There are several unanswered questions here. Why was the motorist unable to stop in time? Who was at fault? Was the bicyclist in the bike lane? Was he attempting to cross the street? Was the driver of the car impaired, distracted, speeding, inattentive or otherwise negligent? I trust officials are looking into these and other issues in order to determine precisely what occurred here.

Liability Issues

Under California law, bicyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of other vehicles. In this particular case, if the other driver is determined to have been at fault, then, she could be held financially responsible for the injuries and damages caused. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, hospitalization and rehabilitation costs.

Car accident victims would be well-advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will analyze all aspects of the incident and ensure that the negligent parties are held liable. A knowledgeable accident lawyer will be able to determine whether a dangerous roadway may have caused or contributed to the incident. If that was the case, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway could also be held liable. Under California Government Code Section 911.2, any personal injury claim against a governmental agency must be filed within six months of the incident.
