Hit-and-Run Driver Sought After Fatal Collision in Long Beach

By

Authorities are looking for a hit-and-run driver who they say fatally struck a security guard at a Long Beach housing complex. According to a KTLA news report, the crash occurred the afternoon of June 12 near the entrance to the Century Villages at Cabrillo housing community on the 2000 block of San Gabriel Avenue. The victim was identified as 54-year-old Derrick Smith.

Deadly Hit and Run

Smith was a security guard at Century Villages, a housing community aimed at helping abused women and veterans. Police said a gray 2012 Chevy Tahoe was driving at a high rate of speed when it lost control and struck the security guard shack, killing the man inside. The driver of the SUV then fled on foot and is still at large, police said.

A suspect description is not available. Police are still canvassing the area for witnesses and information. Anyone with information regarding this incident is asked to contact Long Beach Police at 562-570-7355.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family members of Derrick Smith for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.

Leaving the Scene of a Crash

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Chevy did not remain at the scene, as required under the law. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

Drivers also have the obligation to exchange information with others involved in a collision and most importantly, get help for the injured victim. This helps ensure the injured victims are able to get medical help and assistance right away. This could also make the difference between life and death in many cases.

Families who have lost loved ones in a hit-and-run collision may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault party seeking compensation for damages including medical expenses, funeral costs, lost future income, pain and suffering, and loss of love, care, and companionship. An experienced Long Beach car accident attorney will be able to advise victims and families about their legal rights and options.
