Los Angeles Car Accident Kills Elderly Woman

By

An 82-year-old woman was killed in a Los Angeles car accident, which also resulted in seven additional injuries. According to a news report in The Los Angeles Daily News, the fatal car accident occurred at Avenue K and 20th Street East in Lancaster the night of November 25, 2010. Ziola Weipp, 39, and Lorena Sameron, 34, were both injured when their respective vehicles collided at the street intersection. The elderly woman killed in this car accident was a passenger in Weipp’s vehicle.

My deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the woman killed in this tragic car accident. My thoughts and prayers are also with all those who were injured here. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), 10 people were killed and 679 were injured in Lancaster car accidents. In Los Angeles County as a whole 667 fatalities and 52,229 injuries were reported as a result of car accidents during the same year.

What Caused This Fatal Car Accident?

It is unclear from the report what may have led to this fatal injury accident. The intersection where this accident took place is monitored by traffic lights. I trust investigators are looking into whether one of the drivers failed to obey a traffic light. There are other questions that remain at this point. Was one of the motorists driving inattentively? Did drugs or alcohol contribute to the accident? Did one of the drivers fail to yield right-of-way at the intersection? These are some of the issues that commonly play a role in car accident cases involving two or more vehicles at street intersections.

According to California Vehicle Code Section 21800 (a): “The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.”

Liability Issues

The family of a victim killed in a Los Angeles car accident due to someone else’s negligence or wrongdoing may pursue financial compensation for their losses by filing a wrongful death claim. Such claims usually seek compensation for medical or funeral expenses, lost future income, loss of love and companionship, and other related damages. Injured victims can seek compensation for medical costs, loss of earnings and other damages. An experienced Los Angeles car accident attorney will be able to better advise car accident victims and their families about their legal rights and options.
