An 88-year-old woman was killed in a Santa Ana pedestrian accident after a truck hit her while she was crossing the street. According to a report in The Orange County Register, the woman was struck by a vehicle that was turning left from Sullivan Street onto Willits Street just before noon on Feb. 23rd. Officers found the pedestrian in the street with major injuries. She was transported to an area hospital where she succumbed to her injuries. Her name has not been released yet.
Ongoing Investigation
The 89-year-old driver of the vehicle that struck the woman left without stopping to check on her, police said. But investigators did find him a few blocks away at his residence. He reportedly cooperated with the authorities. Police do not suspect that alcohol was a factor. Police say it is not clear if the man was aware that he had struck someone. He was questioned at the police station and then released. Prosecutors will decide whether or not to pursue a criminal case. The investigation is still ongoing.

Based on this news report, it appears that for some reason the elderly driver did not see the pedestrian crossing the street and struck her. Officials say they are not even sure if the driver knew he had hit someone. Leaving the scene of an injury or fatal crash is a felony crime in California.
California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”
We trust officials are looking into whether age was a factor in this crash. In such cases, the at-fault driver can be held liable for the damages and losses caused.
