Elderly Bicyclist Killed in Los Angeles Hit-and-Run Car Accident

By

Eduardo Perez, 71, of Canoga Park died from injuries sustained in a Los Angeles car accident, which officials say, involved a hit-and-run driver. According to an NBC news report, the fatal bicycle accident occurred the afternoon of May 14, 2011 when Perez was riding his bicycle eastbound on the south crosswalk of Sherman Way. Officials say a small, black, four-door SUV hit him. The vehicle was going east on Sherman Way and turning right on Canoga Avenue just before the collision happened.

The driver of the SUV fled the scene of the crash. Perez was transported to a local hospital with critical injuries. He died two days later. Anyone with information about this hit-and-run car accident is asked to contact LAPD’s Valley Traffic Division at 818-644-8045. Tipsters are also encouraged to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (800-222-8477).

I offer my deepest condolences to everyone who knew and loved Eduardo Perez for their tragic and heartbreaking loss. This grieving family will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Bicycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 10 fatalities and 1,518 injuries involving bicycle accidents in the city of Los Angeles. Also, in Los Angeles County as a whole, 33 people died and 3,315 were injured in bicycle accidents in 2008.

Leaving the Scene of an Accident

Based on this news report, the driver of the SUV not only struck and critically injured this elderly man, but the driver left this person lying on the roadway without care or medical attention, exposing him to further danger. In my opinion, there can be no acceptable excuse for such an act of cruelty and callousness. It is despicable to leave a human being to die on the roadway – regardless of how scared or panicked one might be.

Leaving the scene of an injury car accident is also against the law. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

I truly hope this hit-and-run driver is quickly apprehended and brought to justice. Families of victims killed in hit-and-run car accidents would be well-advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help protect their legal rights. A skilled car accident attorney will better advise victims’ families about how their own car insurance policy might apply to a hit-and-run collision where the driver is not identified, or, in a case where the at-fault motorist is uninsured or underinsured.
