Driver Arrested in Suspected DUI Crash That Left One Man Dead and Four Children Injured

By

A suspected drunk driver was arrested after a fiery crash that killed a 31-year-old man and seriously injured four children in San Bernardino the night of Nov. 27. According to a KTLA news report, Brandon Jaquez-Perez, 23, was driving a Ford Mustang at a high speed on Kendall Drive when he blew through a red light at the intersection of University Parkway.

Fatal Collision and Injuries

The Mustang slammed into a Toyota Camry and caused the vehicle to go up in flames. A Bakersfield man who was driving the Camry was killed and four children who were passengers in the vehicle sustained serious injuries. Two of the children suffered life-threatening injuries while one sustained severe injuries and another suffered “moderate” injuries. They were all rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Jaquez-Perez was arrested on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated. Speed and alcohol appear to be factors in this fatal crash, San Bernardino police officials said. Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Dan Acosta or Sgt. Jeff Harvey at 909-384-5792.

We offer our deepest condolences to the family of members of the deceased victim for their tragic loss. We also wish the injured children the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Let us keep everyone who has been affected in our thoughts and prayers.

Laws and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver of the Mustang was not only driving under the influence but was also driving at a high rate of speed and blew through a red light at the intersection, causing this horrific collision. Under California Vehicle Code 23152 (a), it is illegal to operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and or drugs. California Vehicle Code Section 22350 (Basic Speed Law) requires motorists to operate within speed limits or drive at a safe speed given traffic, roadway and weather conditions.

In such cases where negligence or wrongdoing was involved, injured victims and families of deceased victims can seek compensation for their injuries, damages and losses. An experienced San Bernardino DUI victims’ lawyer can help injured victims and their families seek maximum compensation for their losses and hold the at-fault parties accountable.
