College Student Suffers Brain Injury After Redondo Beach DUI Collision

Ashley Elizabeth Murray, a 21-year-old college student, remained hospitalized in critical condition after a suspected drunk driver crashed into the Uber vehicle in which she was traveling in Redondo Beach. According to a KTLA news report, Murray had spent the evening out with friends and was heading home with a male companion early morning on Dec. 22 when a driver ran a red light at the intersection of Artesia Boulevard and Aviation Way and slammed into the Uber vehicle.

Significant Brain Injuries

Murray suffered significant brain injuries in the crash and underwent multiple surgeries, according to her best friend. She has yet to regain consciousness. Police arrested the suspected DUI driver who has been identified as Jossy Patrick Avalos, 24. He has been charged with multiple felony counts including DUI causing great bodily injury.

Murray’s companion was also seriously injured and remained hospitalized. He was, however, said to be in stable condition. Murray and her friend had called the Uber after visiting bars in San Pedro and Hermosa Beach with friends. Murray’s family and friends have set up a GoFundMe account to help pay for extensive medical costs.

Our hearts go out to Ashley Murray and her family members who are going through a horrible time particularly during the holidays. We wish her the very best for a complete recovery. We are relieved to hear that her friend who was also injured is now in stable condition. This was a case where Murray and her friend did everything right and did the responsible thing by taking an Uber after a night a partying. It is indeed unfortunate that they were struck by someone who, unfortunately, didn’t choose to be responsible.

DUI and Liability Issues

It is illegal under California laws to operate a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs. In addition to facing criminal charges, DUI drivers can also be held financially responsible for the injuries, damages and losses they cause. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities and pain and suffering. Injured victims would also be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
