San Bernardino Hit-And-Run Car Accident Causes Injuries

By

A man was injured in a San Bernardino car accident involving a hit-and-run driver. According to a news report in The Inland Valley Daily Bulletin, the hit-and-run car accident occurred near the intersection of Baseline Road and Beryl Street in Rancho Cucamonga, the afternoon of July 29, 2011. The injured pedestrian was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Authorities were able to locate the driver responsible for this collision shortly after the accident. The extent of the victim’s injuries is not known. It is also not clear if the driver will be charged with leaving the scene of the crash.

My thoughts and prayers are with the man injured in this hit-and-run car accident. I wish him the very best for a complete and speedy recovery.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2009 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), one person was killed and 22 were injured in Rancho Cucamonga pedestrian accidents. During that same year, there were 39 fatalities and 440 injuries reported involving San Bernardino County pedestrian accidents.

Hit-And-Run Car Accidents

It is not clear what caused this pedestrian accident. Did the motorist fail to yield the right of way? Why was the driver unable to avoid the collision? Was the driver drunk, speeding, fatigued or distracted? There are many questions that must be answered by investigators here.

It appears, however, that the driver broke the law by leaving the scene of the crash. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.” Not only is it an illegal act, but also an unconscionable one. What kind of a person strikes and injures another human being and then leaves him lying on the roadway without care or medical attention? I’m relieved to hear that this driver was apprehended.

Liability Issues

Victims of hit-and-run accidents may seek financial compensation by filing a personal injury claim and through the uninsured motorist clause of their own auto insurance policy. In such cases, victims can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, physical therapy, and other damages. An experienced San Bernardino personal injury lawyer will help car accident victims better understand their legal rights.
