Bus Accident Injures Two in Los Angeles

By

A car accident in Los Angeles left two people injured in Baldwin Park the morning of August 30, 2010. According to a news report in The San Gabriel Valley Tribune, the collision happened in the westbound lanes of the 10 Freeway near Puente Avenue when a Foothill Transit bus hit a 2008 Nissan Altima, which then collided with a Jeep Cherokee. Investigators are looking into whether an unsafe lane change on the part of the bus driver or the driver of a Dodge Ram caused this collision. A passenger on the bus and the driver of the Nissan suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

It is indeed fortunate that no one was seriously injured in this crash. I wish the injured victims and speedy and full recovery. They will be in my prayers.

Traffic Accidents

In Los Angeles County, 667 people died and 52,229 were injured as a result of car accidents in 2008, according to CHP’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In the city of Baldwin Park, four deaths and 289 personal injuries were reported in 2008 as a result of car accidents.

Laws and Liability Issues

California Vehicle Code Section 21658 (a) states that whenever a roadway has been divided into two or more clearly marked lanes for traffic in one direction the vehicle “shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from the lane until such movement can be made with reasonable safety.” In this case, if the bus driver is determined to have been at fault, then, he and his employer, the transit company, could be held liable for the injuries caused to the bus passenger and the driver of the Nissan. If the driver of the Dodge was at fault, then, he or she could be held liable for the injuries and damages caused.

In such cases, injured victims could seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of earnings, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages.
