Million Dollar Elder Abuse Verdict from Bed Sore Infection

By

When it comes to the care and protection of the elderly, absolute vigilance is required. If attention laps, something as simple as a bed sore can become infected and even lead to death.

According to the Modesto Bee, Elizabeth Pao and family were awarded $1.1 million dollars for just such an event. Pao’s mother, Frances Tanner, had fallen in March 2005 and broken her hip. Bed sores developed from neglectful care and she was pronounced dead shortly after.

The care center, known originally as Colonial Healthcare but recently renamed to Hilltop Manor, has had a history of problems. According to the original reporter: “Colonial, which recently changed its name to Hilltop Manor, has a history of problems with state regulators. The state moved last year to revoke Colonial’s license but instead reached a settlement agreement with the home that allowed it to remain open.”

It’s alarming how quickly a healthy and vibrant senior can experience a turn for the worse. Although we assume that everyone involved with assisted living and senior centers is competent and attentive, history has proved this to be untrue far too many times.

If you are currently searching for a senior home, or have a loved one enrolled in one, never be afraid to inspect the situation and ask questions regarding their policies and employees. There is simply too much precedent to ignore the possibility of neglect.
