11-year-old Boy Seriously Injured in Los Angeles Hit and Run Crash

By

Los Angeles Police Department officials have released a surveillance video of a hit-and-run crash in South Los Angeles in which an 11-year-old boy suffered serious injuries. The major injury crash occurred the afternoon of March 24 in the area of 42nd Street and McKinley Avenue as the child ran across the street trying to catch up with an ice cream truck.

Hit-and-Run Causing Injury

In the surveillance footage, the driver is seen stopping and exiting the vehicle and then leaving the scene without rendering aid or identifying himself, as required under the law. Officials said the boy suffered severe injuries, but have not released other details about his condition.

The suspect’s vehicle is described as a gray or beige 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe SUV with a California license plate (6SEZ288). Investigators also said the car was reported stolen out of the Rampart Division a few days earlier. The authorities are offering a reward of up to $25,000 to community members who provide information leading to the suspect’s arrest. Anyone with information is urged to contact LAPD detectives at 213-833-3713.

Laws and Liability Issues

Based on this news report, it appears that the driver not only struck and seriously injured a child who was running behind an ice cream truck but also left him lying in the street, exposed to more hazards. Officials say the driver was also in a stolen vehicle, which possibly explains why he did not provide information or wait for authorities to arrive.

Regardless, leaving the scene of an injury crash is a felony crime in California. Motorists are required to stop immediately, remain at the scene and exchange information with the parties involved. Most importantly, they are required to get prompt assistance for injured victims – an act that could save the person’s life.

In such cases, at-fault drivers, when apprehended, can be held financially responsible for the injuries, damages and losses caused. Injured victims can seek compensation for damages such as medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, permanent injuries, rehabilitation, cost of future treatment and pain and suffering. They would also be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles hit and run lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and help protect their legal rights and options throughout the process.
