Santa Ana police officers are looking for one of two drivers who they say struck and injured a teen girl as she was running through moving traffic. According to a CBS Los Angeles news report, the hit-and-run accident, which occurred March 3, 2014, was caught on camera at Santa Ana College at 17th and Bristol streets. Officials say the high school sophomore was technically at fault because she was running against the red light. However, the two drivers who hit her, one in a red truck and the other in a black sedan fled the scene after stopping briefly.
The teen suffered leg injuries. A Good Samaritan followed one of the fleeing drivers while calling 911. A 32-year-old man in the red truck was arrested on suspicion of hit-and-run and driving without a license. Police are still looking for the driver of the black sedan. Officials say the female driver of the car got out, went over to the pedestrian, looked at her and then left. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call 714-245-8665.
Pedestrian Accidents
There were seven fatalities and 139 injuries involving pedestrian accidents in Santa Ana, according to California Highway Patrol’s 2011 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In Orange County as a whole, 38 fatalities and 773 injuries were reported due to pedestrian accidents during the same year.
Leaving the Scene of a Crash
Based on this news report, it appears that the drivers in this case struck the girl and then fled the scene without stopping to help the injured victim. California law requires drivers to stop immediately and remain at the scene of a traffic collision, regardless of who was at fault. Drivers are required to wait for the authorities to arrive, exchange pertinent information with all parties involved and most importantly, render aid to the injured victim or victims. In this case, the drivers left the scene without waiting for authorities or rendering aid. In fact, the report states one of the drivers went up to the victim, made some type of contact with her and then left, leaving the girl lying on the roadway. Appalling!
