Pit Bull Attack in San Bernardino Causes Major Injuries

By

A Victorville woman was seriously injured in a dog bite incident after she was mauled by two pit bulls while walking out to get her mail. The San Bernardino Sun reports that the brutal dog attack occurred the afternoon of April 2, 2010 near the intersection of Barrington Street and Fuschia Lane. San Bernardino sheriff’s officials saw the victim on the street as the dogs were attacking her. Police had to shoot and kill the pit bulls because of the dogs’ hostility and aggression toward neighbors who came to help as well as emergency personnel who were attending to the injured victim.

Seemingly Vicious Dogs

Police say the dogs had attacked several children at that neighborhood shortly before the woman was mauled. An 11-year-old girl suffered a bite to her foot as she fled from the dogs. The injured woman was transported to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

I sympathize with this severely injured victim as well as the children who were attacked. Dog attacks not only put individuals in physical danger, but can also cause significant emotional trauma to victims. I wish the injured woman the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. I truly hope she has not sustained any catastrophic injuries. She will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Dog Bite Law

Dog owners in California can be held not only criminally responsible for negligence, but also financially responsible for injuries caused to victims. California’s Civil Code Section 3342 states: “The owner of any dog is liable for the damages suffered by any person who is bitten by the dog while in a public place or lawfully in a private place, including the property of the owner of the dog, regardless of the former viciousness of the dog or the owner’s knowledge of such viciousness.” Dog bite victims can seek compensation to cover medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, cosmetic surgery expenses and even psychological counseling. The dog owner’s homeowner’s insurance policy should also cover dog bite damages.

Victims in such cases would be well-advised to seek the legal counsel of an experienced San Bernardino dog bite lawyer who will make sure that the negligent parties are held accountable.

Are you happy with your city’s dangerous dog ordinance? Do you think it needs to be updated?
