Motorcyclist Sought in Sylmar Hit and Run Crash That Injured Child

Police are searching for a motorcyclist who they say fled the scene after running over a 6-year-old boy who was riding a scooter. The incident occurred on the evening of Oct. 25 near the intersection of Cobalt Street and Encinitas Avenue in Sylmar. The child was transported to a nearby hospital to be treated for injuries sustained in the crash. The surveillance video that was released by the LAPD shows the Suzuki motorcycle going down shortly after striking the child.

Traumatizing Incident for Family

Police said the boy was with his dad and two other siblings. Their father was just steps away and ran to his son after the crash. The boy’s mother, Diana Gonzalez, said she and her two other sons, 8 and 13, have been traumatized by what they saw. She said they were headed back from a park when the crash occurred. LAPD officials said the motorcyclist stopped briefly but fled without giving any information to the father and without stopping to help.

It looked like the child was unresponsive. So, the man just put his helmet on and left, officials said. The boy is said to be recovering from his injuries. The rider is described as a Latino man in his early 20s with black hair. He was also wearing black clothing and riding a black and white Suzuki motorcycle. Officials are offering a $25,000 reward for information leading to the man’s arrest. Anyone with information is asked to call Valley Traffic at 818-644-8117.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the injured boy. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Justice for Hit and Run Victims

It is illegal under California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) to leave the scene of an injury collision. Hit and run causing injury is a felony crime under California law. In such cases, it is the victims and their families who must face medical expenses and other challenges in the aftermath of the crash. Without the at-fault party to hold responsible, hit and run victims and their families struggle to seek the compensation they need during this time to meet these unforeseen expenses.

If you or a loved one has been injured in a hit-and-run crash, it may be in your best interest to contact an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer who will stay on top of the official investigation and help ensure that your legal rights and best interests are protected. An experienced personal injury lawyer will also be able to advise victims and their families about other possible ways to secure compensation to help meet medical costs and other expenses.
