Police Say Woman Was Speeding Before Fatal Las Vegas Crash

William Alvarado, 22, was killed in a Las Vegas car accident after a driver traveling more than 80 mph in a 35-mph zone crashed into his vehicle.

According to a news report in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, 40-year-old Takiyah Ross of Arizona faces a charge of reckless driving resulting in death in connection with the crash that killed Alvarado.

Excessive Speed

The fatal collision occurred the night of March 25. Police say Ross was driving a 2007 Mercedes Benz C230 east on Bonanza Road toward the 21st Street intersection at a high rate of speed. Alvarado was northbound on 21st Street in a 2006 BMW 325i and tried to make a left turn onto Bonanza Road. The two cars collided at the intersection. The BMW spun out of control and ended 167 feet away from where the cars collided, the police report said.

Alvarado and Ross were transported to a hospital, where Alvarado later died. It is not known if drugs or alcohol were factors. Police interviewed witnesses and used tire marks on the road to determine if Ross was driving at a minimum of 53 mph before the crash. An officer also found that the Mercedes’ speedometer needle was locked at about 82 mph.

During a crash, “when a vehicle experiences a rapid loss of power, the stepper motors that operate a vehicle’s speedometer lose power and freeze the needle in place,” the report said. The report said that the posted speed limit on Bonanza road is 35 mph, and there are three intersections with marked crosswalks within under a mile of where the crash occurred.

Laws and Liability Issues

Nevada’s basic speed rule prohibits motorists from driving at a speed that is greater than is reasonable. Drivers are required to exercise due care and respect traffic, roadway, and weather conditions. The law also prohibits motorists from driving at a rate of speed that endangers the life or safety of another person or results in the injury of another person or property.

In such cases where a death is caused by a motorist’s recklessness or negligence, families of deceased car accident victims may be able to file a wrongful death lawsuit against the at-fault driver seeking compensation for their losses. An experienced Las Vegas car accident lawyer will be able to stay abreast of the official investigation and help ensure that victims’ families receive justice and fair compensation.
