Pedestrian Fatally Injured in Los Angeles Car Accident

A man who was killed in a Los Angeles car accident the morning of December 20, 2009, has been identified by authorities as 49-year-old Jamel Kammoun. The Daily Breeze reports that the fatal pedestrian accident occurred when Kammoun was struck by a car driven by a 17-year-old, when he was out on his morning walk on Hawthorne Boulevard. The teen driver, who officials say was speeding, lost control of his vehicle which then jumped the curb and hit Kammoun. The critically injured pedestrian was taken to an area hospital where he died. The 17-year-old could face vehicular manslaughter charges. He has not been arrested pending a police investigation.

I offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jamel Kammoun for their terrible loss. Those who know and love Kammoun say that he was a committed family man and a dedicated math and science teacher at Marymount College, who truly enjoyed his work. His wife and three young children will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Los Angeles Pedestrian Accidents

There were four injuries in Rancho Palos Verdes in 2007 as a result of pedestrian accidents, according to California Highway Patrol’s traffic accident statistics. In Los Angeles County, 210 fatalities and 5,095 injuries occurred due to pedestrian accidents in 2007. Also, countywide, car accidents claimed 712 lives and injured 56,475 people in 2007.

If the details in this news report are accurate, it appears that the 17-year-old driver was operating his vehicle in a reckless and negligent manner at the time of this tragic accident. It is not clear whether he was under the influence or distracted during the collision. Officials believe that the teen was traveling at an unsafe rate of speed when he lost control of the vehicle and struck Kammoun.

Contacting a Skilled Personal Injury Lawyer

It would be in the best interest of Kammoun’s family to contact an experienced Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, who will clearly explain their legal rights and options. A knowledgeable car accident lawyer will also be able to explain to the family how their car insurance policy would apply in a case involving an uninsured or underinsured motorist. The family may also be able to file a wrongful death claim citing negligence or wrongdoing.
