Mom Seeks Justice for Teen Son Injured in East Los Angeles Hit and Run

Sara Cervantes says she is seeking justice for her 14-year-old son, Isaac Cota, who was seriously injured in a bicycle accident she says was caused by a California Highway Patrol officer who then drove away from the scene.

According to a KTLA news report, the teenager was riding his bike in East Los Angeles the night of June 27 during a community car show near Whittier Boulevard and Williamson Avenue when the incident occurred.

Hit-and-Run Bicycle Accident

A witness at the Whittier Boulevard car cruise show recorded the incident. Cervantes said her son was distraught and could not even focus his eyes on his mom. She said she could tell something was wrong because his speech was slurred.

A month later, the boy is still suffering from a concussion and a shoulder injury, Cervantes said. She is seeking justice for her son saying she just wants her son to get better and wants CHP officers to be taken off patrol. CHP has not yet commented on this incident or said if they are investigating.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Isaac Cota and his family. We wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery.

Justice and Compensation

It is illegal for anyone to leave the scene of an injury or fatal car accident. California Vehicle Code 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.”

If this crash was indeed caused by a CHP officer who later fled the scene, it is important that an outside agency conduct an independent investigation and hold the at-fault individual accountable. In addition to facing criminal penalties, hit-and-run drivers and potentially their employers could also be held financially responsible for the injuries, damages, and losses they cause.

Injured victims can seek compensation for damages including medical expenses, lost income, hospitalization, cost of rehabilitation, permanent injuries, disabilities, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. They would also be well advised to contact an experienced Los Angeles car accident lawyer who will stay abreast of the official investigation and make sure their legal rights and best interests are protected.
