A 35-year-old motorcyclist sustained major injuries in a Huntington Beach car accident the morning of March 14, 2011. According to a news report in The Orange County Register, the injury motorcycle accident occurred at the intersection of Magnolia Street and Yorktown Avenue when the man’s Suzuki motorcycle collided with a 1996 Honda Civic. The motorcyclist was transported to a local trauma center with serious injuries. The driver of the Honda Civic, an 18-year-old, was not injured. My heart goes out to this injured motorcycle accident victim. I wish him the very best for a speedy and complete recovery. Please keep this victim and his family in your thoughts and prayers.

Motorcycle Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were no fatalities, but 49 injuries reported due to motorcycle accidents in Huntington Beach. In Orange County as a whole, 35 people died and 801 were injured in motorcycle accidents during the same year.

What Caused This Injury Accident?

Based on this news report, officials continue to look for anyone who may have witnessed this Huntington Beach street intersection accident. It is not clear at this point who was at fault or if either one of the drivers failed to yield right-of-way at the intersection.

According to California Vehicle Code Section 21800 (a): “The driver of a vehicle approaching an intersection shall yield the right-of-way to any vehicle which has entered the intersection from a different highway.”

Fault and Liability

I trust officials are also looking into whether the young driver of the Honda was under the influence, distracted, speeding or otherwise negligent at the time of the accident. If it is determined that the teen driver caused the accident, he or she could be held liable for the motorcyclist’s serious injuries. Injured victims in such cases can seek compensation for medical expenses, loss of wages, cost of hospitalization, rehabilitation and other related damages. Car accident victims would be well advised to seek the counsel of an experienced Huntington Beach personal injury lawyer, who will stay abreast of the official investigation and ensure that their legal rights and best interests are protected.
