Hit-and-Run Car Accident Proves Fatal for Motorcyclist

Police in Lake County are looking for a hit-and-run driver who they say ran a stop sign, struck and killed a motorcyclist the morning of September 24, 2010. The Record-Bee reports that the fatal hit-and-run car accident happened at the intersection of Highway 29 and Seigler Canyon Road. The rider was southbound on Highway 29 on a Honda Gold Wing motorcycle when the driver of a Chevy Suburban drove through a stop sign and hit the motorcyclist. Witnesses saw the Suburban make a U-turn and flee the scene of the accident. The motorcyclist died at a nearby hospital.

My heart goes out to everyone who knew and loved this motorcyclist for their tragic and devastating loss. They will be in my prayers.

Hit-and-Run Statistics

California Highway Patrol’s 2008 traffic accident data indicates that there were 17,158 hit-and-run accidents that resulted in fatalities or injuries in California. A majority of these car accidents involved serious personal injuries. There were a total of 247 deaths in 2008 involving hit-and-run car accidents statewide.

Reporting Hit-and-Run Drivers

Leaving the scene of a crash or hit-and-run accident is against the law. California Vehicle Code Section 20001 (a) states: “The driver of a vehicle involved in an accident resulting in injury to a person, other than himself or herself, or in the death of a person shall immediately stop the vehicle at the scene of the accident.” It is also an outrageous act of cruelty. To leave critically injured person on the street without medical attention after striking them and causing their injuries, is unacceptable.

As a California personal injury lawyer, who represents victims of car accidents, I am absolutely appalled by such blatant disregard for public safety and lack of concern for a fellow human being. I trust officials will soon apprehend this hit-and-run driver and bring him or her to justice.
