Bicycle Accident Statistics

Bicycling has really surged during the coronavirus pandemic particularly in Southern California where we have good weather throughout the year. According to statistics from California Healthline, even in the years before the pandemic, between 2016 and 2018 more cyclists died in traffic accidents across the state during any three-year period in the past 25 years.

Traffic accidents killed 455 cyclists in California from 2016 through 2018, before the pandemic, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Liability Issues

Based on this news report, this collision between the bicycle and the vehicle occurred at a street intersection. There are still a number of unanswered questions here. What caused the crash? Was the driver impaired at the time? Was he or she distracted or driving in a reckless manner? Did the driver fail to yield the right of way to the young bicyclist? Was there a dangerous roadway condition that caused or contributed to this bicycle accident?

In such cases, if the driver is determined to have been negligent, he or she could be held liable for the injuries, damages, and losses caused. If a dangerous roadway condition caused this collision, the city or governmental agency responsible for maintaining the roadway can also be held liable. An experienced Riverside personal injury lawyer will be able to help injured victims and their families better understand their legal rights and options.
