San Francisco Car Accident Critically Injures Girl

A 13-year-old suffered critical injuries in a San Francisco car accident after a man crashed his vehicle into her family’s home the evening of September 29, 2009. According to a KTVU news report, the girl, who has not been identified, still remains in critical condition after suffering broken ribs and head injuries. The driver apparently lost control of his car in the 3800 block of Callan Boulevard and veered off the roadway into an apartment. The family was in the living room at the time. The girl’s parents, as well as the driver of the car, were also hospitalized, but their injuries were not life-threatening.

My heart goes out to this entire family for the physical and emotional trauma as a result of this car accident, but especially for the teenager who has been the most seriously injured. I wish all injured victims — the girl and her parents — the very best for a quick and complete recovery. Please keep them in your prayers.

San Francisco Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2007 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were 51 fatalities and 3,632 injuries involving car accidents reported in San Francisco.

It’s not clear based on this news report, how or why the horrific car accident occurred. Was there a vehicle defect or a mechanical malfunction that caused the driver to crash? Was the driver of the car who lost control, intoxicated at the time? Did he suffer a medical condition that caused him to veer off the roadway and into this apartment home? Was he somehow distracted or otherwise negligent? I trust investigators are looking into all these factors as they try to determine who or what caused this accident. The driver has not been charged pending an investigation.
