Orange County Car Accident Causes Major Injuries

Two people sustained major injuries in an Orange County car accident the morning of March 26, 2010, after a vehicle was T-boned at an intersection. The Orange County Register reports that a Saab and a Mazda collided at the intersection of Chapman Avenue and Calle Grande, in Orange. Two victims were transported to area hospitals, and the driver of the Mazda 626 is said to be in critical condition. Orange police are investigating the cause of the crash.

My heart goes out to the seriously injured victims of this car crash. I wish them the very best for a speedy and complete recovery from their injuries. Please keep them in your prayers.

Car Accident Statistics

According to California Highway Patrol’s 2008 Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS), there were nine fatalities and 823 injuries involving car accidents in Orange, California. In Orange County as a whole, 152 fatalities and 13,414 injuries were reported as a result of traffic accidents during the same year.

Car Accident Causes and Liability Issues

It is not clear from this report how or why this car crash occurred. What we know is that the Mazda was T-boned at the intersection by the Saab. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), nearly half of all car accidents occur at intersections. Tragically, these crashes tend to be T-bone collisions or side-impact collisions that happen at right angles. These accidents can result in severe injuries because the sides of vehicles offer less protection from the impact of a collision then the front or back of the vehicle.

It is important, in these types of accidents, to determine if one of the drivers failed to yield the right-of-way at the intersection? Did one of the drivers run a red light? Was there a traffic light at this intersection and if so, was it functioning properly or functioning at all, at the time of the car collision? The answers to such questions should help pinpoint the cause of this accident and who must be held liable for it. I trust officials are looking at who had the right-of-way at this intersection at the time of the collision.
